My earliest memories took place in your home
When all us kids would spend the night.
We’d get up early to watch cartoon shows
Until we smelled pancake delights.
Each holiday, the whole family came
For your Cranberry Jubilee,
And all our goodbyes were a wave and a cry of
“I love you,” and, “See you next week.”

Leaving was always easy when
“Goodbye,” was only for awhile,
And I knew that I’d see you again.

Each Sunday morning I’d sit in your pew
Taking in every gospel song.
You were the first alto I heard
Though I thought you were singing it wrong.
As I grew and matured and found my own church
We started drifting apart,
A couple tattoos and a city of blue -
I found my way under different stars…

But we’d hug and we’d smile,
Leaving was always easy when
“Goodbye,” was only for awhile,
And I knew that I’d see you again.

The last time we met, you looked at me funny
And asked if you knew me “from before?”
For all my life you’ve been family,
Now I’m a stranger you don’t know anymore.
So I work up a smile and hold out my hand,
I won’t let the tears show.
I can’t get back the you from my past,
The person I lost long ago.
